The definitive sunset of the Albanian south — a hilltop castle terrace with Sarandë bay below, Ksamil to the south and Corfu floating on the horizon.

Sarandë or Ksamil
Lëkurësi Castle was built in the 16th century to watch the approaches to Corfu — and watching is still exactly what it does best. The squat stone fort crowns the hill behind Sarandë, and its walls and terraces serve up the widest view in the region: the curve of Sarandë bay, the Ksamil islands, Butrint's lagoon, and the Greek mainland and Corfu across the strait.
A restaurant and bar operate inside the castle, which makes the ritual simple: arrive an hour before sunset, take a terrace table, and let the show happen.
A 10-minute drive up the switchbacks from Sarandë (taxis know it well); 20–25 minutes from Ksamil. Walking up is possible but steep and shadeless.
Wandering the castle is free; the restaurant inside keeps long hours in season. Sunset tables go fast in July–August — arrive early or book.
Sunset, obviously — but a clear morning gives sharper views of Corfu. Bring a light layer; the hilltop catches the breeze.
Beach and islands all day, castle sunset, dinner back on the coast — the classic southern day.
Butrint in the morning ties the whole landscape below the castle together.
Sarandë's seafront promenade has the area's biggest spread of restaurants and bars.
