Vlorë
Before you even start the Riviera drive, Vlorë hides a small wonder to its north: the Narta Lagoon, and in it, the tiny pine-covered island of Zvërnec. A long wooden footbridge zigzags across the shallow water to the 13th–14th-century Byzantine Monastery of St. Mary — stone, silence, and pines all the way to the waterline.
The lagoon itself is a haven for birdlife; in the cooler months flamingos gather in the shallows, and the salt-flat light at sunset is photographer's gold. It's the gentlest, quietest excursion in this guide — a half-day that feels like a held breath before the coast road south.
About 15–20 minutes' drive north-west of Vlorë via the village of Zvërnec; park near the bridge and walk across.
The bridge and island are free to visit in daylight hours. The monastery church opens irregularly — dress modestly if you hope to step inside.
Sunset over the lagoon is the moment. Autumn through spring brings the flamingos; summer brings stillness and pine shade. Take any rubbish back with you.
Pair it with your Vlorë arrival day — city, lagoon, and an early night before the coast road.
Next morning: Radhimë's coves and fish tavernas, 20 minutes down the coast.
Or trade the lagoon for the wild side — a Karaburun caves trip from Vlorë's harbour.
