Why it's worth your time
Ardenica Monastery stands on a hilltop above the plain, about 18 km south of Lushnjë on the road to Fier. It was built in 1282 by the Byzantine emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos after his victory over the Angevins at Berat, and in 1451 Skanderbeg married Andronika Arianiti here.
The 18th-century Church of St Mary is the reason to come: a carved and gilded iconostasis full of saints, dragons and angels, and frescoes by the Zografi brothers, the celebrated Albanian painters of the period. The monastery once had a library of 32,000 volumes, lost to a fire in 1932.
