Know before you go

Darëzezë — Darzeza to most locals — is part of the long sandy coast south-west of Fier, below the village of Darëzezë e Re. It's a completely different beach to the Riviera: soft sand instead of pebbles, a gently shelving seabed and the flat Adriatic plain behind you instead of mountains.

In recent years it has been promoted locally for its clean water and its sand, which many Albanians believe is good for aches and joints. It stays relaxed and local, with simple beach cabins, a few family-run fish restaurants and plenty of empty sand once you walk away from them.

Getting to Darëzezë and when to go

Getting there

Darëzezë is roughly 30 minutes by car from Fier. Head for the village of Darëzezë e Re and follow the road to the sea.

The road in

The last stretch from the village has been rough and potholed in the past, especially after rain. The municipality has promised repairs, but take it slowly and avoid low-slung cars after a storm.

The beach

Fine, soft sand and a very gradual slope — you can walk a long way out before it gets deep. Adriatic water here is warm, but it isn't the glass-clear turquoise of the Riviera.

Sunbeds & food

Some restaurants rent sunbeds and shade in summer. Away from them, bring your own umbrella — there are long stretches with no services at all.

When to go

July and August for the warmest water; June and September are quieter and still warm. Weekends bring families from Fier.

With children

Shallow water, soft sand and few crowds make Darëzezë one of the easiest beaches in the area for small children.

Where to stay

Beach cabins

Simple wooden cabins a few steps from the sand, usually attached to a family restaurant — basic, but you wake up to the sea.

Camping

Campers and campervans are a common sight. Ask at the beach restaurants about pitches and facilities.

Stay in Fier

Fier has the widest choice of hotels in the area and puts Apollonia, Ardenica and the beaches all within half an hour.

Where to eat

Fish on the sand

Family restaurants behind the beach grill fish and seafood and serve traditional Albanian dishes — ask what came in that day.

Picnic supplies

Services are thin away from the restaurants, so stock up on water and snacks in Fier on the way.

Dinner in Fier

For more choice, head back into the city for the evening.

Don’t leave without

Walk the shoreline

The sand runs for kilometres — walk away from the restaurants and you'll have it almost to yourself.

Sunset over the Adriatic

This coast faces west, so the sun drops straight into the sea. Stay for it.

Apollonia on the way

Combine a morning at Apollonia with an afternoon on the sand.
